As Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Of all forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and inhumane.”
In the United States, April 11th–17th is recognized as Black Maternal Health Week. This observance brings national attention to the persistently high maternal mortality rates, particularly among Black women and women of African descent. Each year, a theme is chosen to guide reflection and action. In 2026, the theme is Rooted in Justice and Joy, a call to address inequities in care while also centering the lived experiences, dignity, and well-being of mothers.
Pregnancy carries both responsibility and risk. Yet no family should have to question whether a mother’s or baby’s outcome is being shaped by bias or unequal treatment. Access to safe, respectful, and equitable care is not optional. It is essential. Creating and sustaining safe spaces for expecting families is one step toward that goal. These spaces offer opportunities to share experiences, exchange resources, and build awareness around available care options. They also help foster a sense of community, something many families need during such a vulnerable time. While health literacy remains a key factor in improving outcomes, emotional well-being cannot be overlooked. Managing stress during pregnancy plays a critical role in both maternal and infant health.
The 2026 theme reminds us that alongside advocacy and education, there must also be intention. Intention to cultivate joy. Joy can take many forms: creative expression, quiet moments of reflection, meaningful connection. Whether it is art, tea gatherings, henna, or visiting a museum, these practices can support emotional balance and create space for peace. When woven into daily or weekly routines, these moments can help transform pregnancy into a more supported and grounded experience, even in the face of systemic challenges.
And beyond all the facts and figures, this conversation comes back to one person, the Black mother.
To the Black mother carrying life:
You are doing something sacred. Something powerful. Something the world may overlook, but heaven witnesses. You deserve softness in a system that can feel harsh. You deserve to be protected, not questioned. To be listened to, not dismissed. Your voice matters, before, during, and long after birth.
May your pregnancy be covered in ease.
May your birth be met with dignity and support.
May your body be honored and your concerns taken seriously.
If you are seeking a birth experience where you are informed, supported, and empowered every step of the way, AMANI Birth is here to walk alongside you. You deserve care that listens, respects, and advocates for you, not just during birth, but throughout your entire journey into motherhood.
