"Did you know that you can measure your cervix dilation without any vaginal exams? That sounds interesting! How is that possible? Have you ever heard of the 'purple line'?

This is the first way to measure dilation. Although it may sound weird or unbelievable, scientific studies have confirmed its accuracy. When a mom is dilating, a purple or brownish line appears, rising upwards from the anus to the top cleft between the buttocks. This visual cue indicates that the baby's head is crowning.

The purple-brownish line is usually visible in about 75% of women in labor, but not typically in those with medically induced labors. As dilation progresses, the line rises higher. Measuring this line alone can be challenging, so it's helpful to have someone assist.

Using the line measurements below, you can estimate dilation:

  • 5.3 cm = 1-2 cm dilated
  • 7.8 cm = 3-6 cm dilated
  • 8.7 cm = 7-8 cm dilated
  • 9.6 cm = 9-10 cm dilated

Since the purple-brownish line is only visible in about 75% of laboring women, do you know another way to determine dilation?
