In labor, things just come out.
“I can't do this.”
“This is too much.”
“I'm not strong enough.”
And in that moment… it really does feel true.
You're not sitting there thinking about what to say, it just slips out, because it's intense, unfamiliar, and overwhelming.
But something we don't always realize is that these words don't just describe what we're feeling… they can actually shape it.
They affect our thoughts, our emotions, even how our body responds to each contraction.
The more panic-filled the words are, the more the body starts to tense.
Breathing changes.
Everything feels heavier.
And slowly, labor can start to feel more overwhelming than it needs to.
But the opposite can happen too.
Gentle, grounding words don't take away the intensity, but they can soften how it's experienced.
They can bring a sense of steadiness in the middle of it all.
You might not be able to control the contractions, but you can gently guide what you return to with your tongue.
And it doesn't have to be anything long or complicated.
There are so many simple, beautiful words from the Qur'an and the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ that we can say, bringing both calm and reward, even in the most intense moments:
Sometimes, a woman might quietly repeat:
اللهم لا سهل إلا ما جعلته سهلاً، وأنت تجعل الحزن إذا شئت سهلاً
"O Allah, there is no ease except what You make easy, and You make difficulty easy if You will."
Or when the intensity starts building and building, even something as simple as:
لا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله
"There is no power and no strength except through Allah"
can bring a quiet sense of grounding.
A reminder that the strength you need isn't coming from you alone, but from the One who created your body for this.
Beautiful words of Dhikr like:
حسبي الله لا إله إلا هو عليه توكلت وهو رب العرش العظيم
"Allah is sufficient for me, there is no god but Him. Upon Him I rely, and He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne"
Can settle the heart when doubt starts creeping in.
And it could be even simpler than that.
A soft SubhanAllah, a whispered Alhamdulillah, a steady Allahu Akbar, just enough to keep the tongue busy and the heart connected, even when everything else feels intense.
The Prophet ﷺ taught us to speak good or remain silent. And in labor, that takes on a very real meaning. Not in a strict way, but as a gentle reminder to move away from words that increase fear, and lean into words that bring calm.
Of course, it won't be perfect. Labor is intense, and you're human. Things will slip out, and that’s okay.
But having a few simple words ready beforehand, something familiar to return to, can make a quiet, powerful difference.
The peace we're searching for isn't always in the moment becoming easier,
but in the heart becoming still.
{ألا بذكر الله تطمئن القلوب}
{Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.}
