As an active doula in a very busy and demanding city, I understand the profound impact I have on the lives of the families I support. My presence whether during pregnancy, childbirth, or postpartum can be a source of immense comfort, guidance, and strength. However, the nature of my work is undeniably unpredictable, and emergencies can arise at any moment. This is precisely why having a "back-up" doula is not just a good idea, it's honestly an essential component of my service.

For example, about two years ago, there was a client who was due at any moment, and unfortunately, SubhanAllah, I became suddenly sick with the flu. My client was counting on me, but I was unable to be there. The stress and anxiety were overwhelming for both myself and my client, and  I had to make the choice whether I would surrender the client to my back-up or hope for the best!  Alhamdulilah, it was an easy choice, as my client was familiar with my back-up doula, as they both met during one of my preparatory meetings. This allowed for a seamless transition for my back-up doula, who  stepped in and ensured the continuity of care and peace of mind for everyone involved.

So, you can see why, retaining a back-up doula is like a handy-dandy, safety net. It provides reassurance that no matter what happens, your client will always have the support they need. Here are a few key reasons why having a back-up doula is  “muy importante”:

  1. Emergency/Illness

Life is unpredictable. Illness, accidents, or personal crises can occur without warning. Providing your client with a back-up doula ensures that your clients will never be left without support during their time of need.

  1. Clients laboring at the same time.

For the few times, where you have multiple clients due around the same time. A back-up doula can help share the load, ensuring that each client receives the attention and care they deserve. This is especially crucial when more than one client goes into labour at the exact same time.

  1. Professional addition to your service.

Collaborating with a back-up doula can also be an opportunity for professional development. You can learn from each other, share experiences, and grow your practice together. This can be more important if you partner with a less experienced doula. You can share your experiences, mentor and help such doulas, while they assist you as your back-up doulas.

  1. Building your client’s trust.

A client who knows that there's a plan in place for any eventuality is more likely to have trust in your professionalism as a doula. It ultimately shows that you're reliable and have their best interests at heart.

  1. For your own mental health.

The knowledge that there's someone to cover for you in case of an emergency can significantly reduce your stress levels. This peace of mind is crucial for your own well-being.

In conclusion, a back-up doula is more than just a substitute doula. They are a partner in the continuity of care which we provide as doulas. They are a collaborator, and a vital part of ensuring that every client receives the support they need. By having a back-up doula, you're not just protecting yourself and your clients, you're building a stronger, more resilient support community that can weather any storm.

So, come on! Let’s be someone else’s back-up doula!
