After birth, the uterus holds a large internal wound where the placenta was attached, roughly the size of a dinner plate. Once the placenta detaches, that site must heal while the uterus contracts back to its pre-pregnancy size. If such a wound were on someone's arm or leg, everyone would insist they rest and recover.
